About Us!

We feel that the technical superiority of GNU/Linux is without merit if it cannot be used productively. To that end our main agenda is consistantly providing progressive training programs to provide education on the use of GNU/Linux, computers in general, and the benefits of Free and Open Source Software in general.

We will provide at least one class per week that is free of charge and open to the public with extra classes being added as the need arises.  There will be a fee for attendence at some of these extra classes to pay for our expenses.  However these will usually be used to provide some kind of certification or technical training, so these events will be quite different from our normal free classes that focus on desktop usage and day-to-day maintenance of home computers.

Our motto is "Open Source Solutions that Work", and we mean it. If a new computer is to be purchased; for a business, school room, or home use, please consider using a GNU/Linux operating system.  It is an excellent way to maximize the potential of the hardware you are purchasing and will provide years of reliable and secure service. This is true whether you are primarily using the machine for office productivity, music production, classroom projects, software development, a server function, or any of the wide range of uses a home system can be put to.

If desired, Olympic Softworks can provide the install service for you and configure it to fit your needs. We currently use and provide support for the Long Term Service edition of Ubuntu GNU/Linux(v8.04 Hardy Heron). We feel that Ubuntu is the best distribution of GNU/Linux available for all but a few, very technical, purposes.  Ubuntu is a community supported distrobution and is available with or without a support contract from Canonical inc., the company behind the Ubuntu Project.

If you bring a computer or laptop to one of our free classes we will be glad to install Ubuntu GNU/Linux onto it as the only OS on the machine, or in a non-destructive process as a multi-boot option with windows.  There will be no charge for this now, or ever.

We also accept donations of older computers and laptops(800mhz or faster).  We then bench test the machine, clean the hard-drive using DoD approved software, and prepare the machine to be given to a family that cannot afford one of their own.  If you are, or know of, such a family in the Olympia area please email us at inbox@olympicsoftworks.org with a phone number where we can reach you and a description of what is needed.

Olympic Softworks is currently working with local and online vendors, finalizing partnerships to be able to consistantly provide quality hardware that is "Linux Certified".  This is to support our commercial operations of building desktop workstations and workstation/servers. This has proven to be a time consuming process as we try to educate vendors of the need to maintain an inventory of this hardware if they want to capitalize on the rising tide of GNU/Linux adoption.

Once this is complete we will begin to offer computers for sale that we build and provide Ubuntu GNU/Linux pre-installed and optionally pre-configured in a number of ways.  If you are interested in having us build a machine for you please email us at inbox@olympicsoftworks.org or continue checking back to this site for updates.
