GNU/Linux and Free and Open Source Software NewsApril 9, 08 - PCWorld - GNU/Linux shows signs of solid growth The Linux Kernel is not developed by any one entity, but is a huge group effort of huge number of contributers. This is the reason the Kernel grows at the rate it does. With the level and calibre of peer review this kind of co-operation allows perhaps being the greatest asset, and this would not be possible if it were not licensed as Free and Open Source Software. April 6, 08 - PCWorld - Regarding contributions to the Linux kernel Adobe has joined the Linux Foundation, shows alpha version of AIR for GNU/Linux. May 31, 08 - PCWorld Adobe shows beta version of Flash 10 for GNU/Linux. July 5, 08 - Practical Tech Along with Joining the Linux Foundation, Adobe has started what it calls the 'Open Screen Project'. It seems that while they maintain rights to develop new closed source aps, they are releasing key IP for their legacy products. July, 08? - Adobe Adobe is catching a major clue on the changes in the computing device landscape. This shows that Adobe is aware of our growing market share and is looking to be fully on-board with it's newer product offerings. Now they just need to bring their franchise tool suite to GNU/Linux. This time a small to midsize company named Gameloft that makes games for mobile systems(smart phones) moves almost 2000 of their employees desktops to Ubuntu GNU/Linux. Read about it here. The TOP 500 Supercomputers Sites www.top500.org is a project that tracks the 500 most powerful supercomputers on the planet. The Current list is from a survey done in June(I know I'm late but I just found out about this), and it found that almost a full 90% of the 500 are using some version of GNU/Linux. Read about it here. Out of the top 10 for instance, 7 are using SLED9, and 2 are using GNU/Linux but could not(or would not) identify the vendor. |
