Interesting Science and Technology Links

Warning: This one page takes a break from F/OSS advocacy.  For sure, I will place items and links on this page that will have to do with the Free GNU/Linuxes such as Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, CENTos, and so on.  But I will also be placing links to interesting information on other technologies, and various branches of science and medicine as well.  I will also link to newly released products that are built around, or make use of GNU/Linux.

Here is a good way to start this: Astronomy Picture Of The Day, and the more general Nasa Multimedia site as well. Wanna get really 'creeped out'? Take the link off to the right of the Nasa Multimedia page, the Hubble Telescope link, and then the third option in the Site Highlights flash animation. It's gets just a little bit into what is currently being called Dark Energy.

Ok, you may or may not know that Google has been developing an operating system targeted for smart/feature phones.  It is called Android, and is based on GNU/Linux.

To be sure, there are other versions of GNU/Linux out there for smart/feature phones; some of which are available now, and some are still in development...only Motorola(Razor) and T-Mobile(G1) currently sell phones with modern versions of GNU/Linux.  The other manufacturers that have sell phones using GNU/Linux of some sort, approx 50% of all phones world-wide use GNU/Linux, use older and very custom versions of the operating system.

Well, the G1 runs Android, and here are two YouTube movies showing the G1 in action.  Movie#1, Movie#2.

It is late as I write this, but I can't sleep for some reason so I am going through my Google-Alerts.  I have about 200 more emails to go through with lots of stuff I need to put up here, but I have to share this with everyone NOW.

I am amazed sometimes. Keep in mind that GNU/Linux was designed as a server type environment and only the last few years has seen the desktop environment really become something developers focused real time and talent on.  Check out this video.

Almost 2 years ago Mark Shuttleworth said that once F/OSS projects reach a kind of 'parity' with available proprietary software you will see true innovation. I understood the gist of what he meant, but there really is no way to predict where this will go. That is the nature of 'true' innovation after all...not the M$ type where they innovate someone else's idea a little prettier, but the real kind where you don't know what is coming next!

WOOOHOOO! I love F/OSS!
