We now have 2 classes each week!

Class #1

Olympic Softworks' monday class is being offered curtesy of the Olympia Senior Center. Although all classes Olympic Softworks is in volved with are offered free to the public, this class is being given specifically to help serve the needs of our senior population here in Olympia.  The class is held at theSenior Center in down town Olympia, 222 Columbia St NW.  Every Monday evening from 4pm to 5:30pm.  In the computer lab behind the boutique.

Class #2

Olympic Softworks' weekly class on using Free and Open Source Software such as GNU/Linux is currently held in the the context of the Olympia Microcomputer User Group's GNU/Linux SIG(Special Interest Group) at the Senior Center in down town Olympia, 222 Columbia St NW.  Every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm.  In the computer lab behind the boutique.

Some ideas for subjects to discuss:

  • Using Wine(windows compatability layer), and applications written for windows.
  • Using Camera's and MP3 players with GNU/Linux
  • Ripping CDs that you own into MP3 or other formats
  • Ripping movies that you own into .avi, .mpg, or other formats
  • Editing home movies
  • Creating CDs with MP3 files so you can play them in a player that supports MP3
  • Creating CDs with MP3 files for players that do not support MP3
  • Creating a DVD wih your home movie that plays in normal DVD Movie players
  • Using GIMP(Gnu Image Manipulation Program) for photo retouching, editing, and creating of desktop wallpapers
  • Using Inkscape(vector drawing) to create images designed for the web, and much more complicated 3D images as well
  • How to use a 'LiveCD' to preview GNU/Linux on a computer without actually installing anything
All of the applications we use for these various desktop computing needs are Free and Open Source Software solutions.  If you have any questions regarding what can be done, have a suggestion for the class, or want to schedule a seminar for your group or business please email us!   inbox@olympicsoftworks.org.

Below are links to presentations developed for use in the weekly class.  They are working documents, I add to them as I can to improve the structure and  content.  I recommend always making sure you have the latest version of these if you use them yourself.

These are all in Open Data Format, so you will need to have OpenOffice.org installed.  This is excellent software and is available at no cost from thier site.  If downloaded from this site, I gaurantee the safety of these files.
